In 2022, entrepreneurs Bill Murphy, Rob Boynes, and Richard Landzaat launched Huumans, a provider of digital-forward bookkeeping and payroll support, from Nova Scotia.
In 2023, the startup moved to Alberta, where it was named one of Calgary’s 10 most promising startups.
This month, the Calgary fintech unveiled an official relaunch.
The new Huumans aims to bringing cohesion to fintech toolkits, according to Murphy, who serves his startup as chief executive officer.
That is because many owners are “juggling too many tools [and] too many decisions” without enough clarity.
“Small business owners don’t need more tools,” he says. “They need an edge in their business deserves.”
Huumans allows business owners to connect their accounting software, generate a working budget in one click, and view performance against external benchmarks such as Statistics Canada data, according to a statement from the Canadian company.
The platform also includes a marketplace of tools and services ranging from payroll to cash advances alongside AI-driven insights and access to human support.
“Running a business is hard, so [business owners] need practical tools that actually work together, and support that helps them make better decisions,” says Murphy.
Huumans is also opening up a new collaborative model to potential fintech partners.
Rather than acquiring customers through traditional channels, financial products can be surfaced inside the platform at the point of need when a business owner is reviewing their budget, comparing performance, or making operational decisions, according to Chief Revenue Officer Colin Knoll.
“We’re building a trusted environment for small businesses, and that means working with partners who genuinely improve outcomes, not just sell products,” says Knoll. “Our partners need to be obsessed with small business just like we are and treat them with the right care, honesty, and fairness that they deserve.”
