Calgary-based Blackline Safety helped emergency responders monitor conditions at one of the world’s largest sporting events.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue deployed eight of the company’s connected area monitors throughout Miami’s host stadium during the FIFA World Cup, which brought as many as one million fans to the city for matches and related festivities.
The devices continuously monitored for potential hazards and supplied emergency responders with real-time data through Blackline’s cloud-based command platform.
Four of the units were Blackline’s EXO 8 monitors, which can detect up to eight gases and gamma radiation. The department also used four G7 EXO monitors, the earlier version of the technology.
Readings were transmitted over a cellular network to Blackline Live, giving fire crews a central view of conditions inside the stadium. The system provided incident commanders with immediate information to support decision-making and coordinate a response if required.
“These are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, and being asked to protect such a large event is incredible,” said Marcel Berube, Hazmat, Logistics and Training Lieutenant with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. “You’re there in case anything happens, and you have a product that’s going to assist you to help everybody if needed.”
Data from the Blackline platform also informed a joint command involving Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, police, the FBI and other participating agencies.
Blackline worked with the department before fans arrived to configure the system, support its installation and prepare the devices for operational use throughout the tournament. Their long-lasting batteries allowed the monitors to operate without downtime.
“Every day, our technology helps protect workers in some of the world’s most demanding environments,” said Blackline Safety CEO Cody Slater. “At events like the World Cup, or the Winter Olympics in Italy earlier this year, that same mission extends beyond the worksite.”
The Miami deployment followed Blackline’s work at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy and highlighted the growing use of cloud-connected monitoring technology by fire departments and emergency management agencies at major public events.
