This week the Province of Alberta unveiled a comprehensive AI Strategy, positioning itself as the top destination in North America for artificial intelligence (AI) data centres.
With the global demand for data centre capacity expected to triple by 2030, the province aims to secure $100 billion in private investment over the next five years, according to Nate Glubish, Alberta’s Minister of Technology and Innovation.
“We are perfectly positioned to lead this technological revolution,” said Minister Glubish, emphasizing Alberta’s natural advantages and regulatory framework.
Alberta’s AI Data Centres Strategy aims to position the province as a premier destination for AI data centre investments in North America. The strategy focuses on three core pillars:
Power Capacity: Leveraging Alberta’s abundant natural gas reserves and competitive electricity market to provide reliable and affordable energy solutions for AI data centres. The province plans to explore both off-grid and grid-connected power options, integrating renewable energy sources and carbon capture technologies to support sustainable growth.
Sustainable Cooling: Utilizing Alberta’s cold climate to naturally reduce cooling costs for data centres. The strategy encourages the adoption of innovative cooling technologies and emphasizes collaborative resource management to ensure environmentally responsible operations.
Economic Growth: Creating a business-friendly environment through low corporate tax rates and streamlined regulatory processes to attract AI data centre investments. The government aims to foster partnerships with municipalities and Indigenous communities, promoting inclusive economic development and job creation.
By focusing on these pillars, Alberta intends to harness its natural advantages and foster innovation, establishing itself as a global leader in AI-driven data centre operations.
