Innovate Calgary helps bridge the gap between discovery and innovation for startup companies while operating as a technology transfer and business-incubation centre for the University of Calgary.
We’re highlighting seven companies leading up to Collision. Today our spotlight is on LyfeMD.
Company Overview
LyfeMD is dedicated to helping people harness the power of nutrition and lifestyle to lead healthier, happier lives. The company’s flagship product, the LyfeMD app, offers a holistic approach to digestive health management that has been proven by science. Developed by a team of medical experts, the app delivers an easy-to-implement program, along with optional health coaching services, empowering users on their journey towards positive health outcomes and a better quality of life.
LyfeMD offers personalized wellness programs, drawing from over a decade of scientific research, to provide proven, effective strategies for managing digestive and inflammatory health conditions. Its platform connects users with health coaches and registered professionals dedicated to improving their health and quality of life.
Funding and Development
For people living with chronic digestive and inflammatory diseases, it can often be confusing and overwhelming to find the right wellness plan to help manage symptoms. LyfeMD empowers people to take control of their wellness through a holistic approach that incorporates customized health assessments, physical activity and yoga plans, goal-setting, and behavior change supports, including a personal coach. The company has created an easy-to-use solution to help people self-manage their disease and elevate their wellness.
Developed by gastroenterologists, hepatologists, and dietitians, the lifestyle therapies offered through LyfeMD were all created from evidence-based research as part of Ascend (Alberta’s Collaboration of Excellence for Nutrition in Digestive Disease), which brings together experts from the University of Calgary and University of Alberta, led by Dr. Maitreyi Raman out of the Cumming School of Medicine.
LyfeMD was officially launched in May 2021. The company has received investment from UCeed, a venture philanthropy fund accelerating University of Calgary and community-based startup companies to advance problem-solving research, create jobs, and fuel the economy. A key program in the university innovation ecosystem, UCeed bridges the gap between innovation, demonstration, and commercialization, and is managed by the university’s knowledge-transfer and business incubator, Innovate Calgary.
Earlier this year, LyfeMD earned a $60,000 investment at Toronto Metropolitan University’s annual Women Innovation Summit, where tech startups pitch their businesses to angel investors from The Firehood to secure cash investments.
Expert Leadership
LyfeMD was founded by its CEO Dr. Lorian Taylor, along with a team of gastroenterologists, hepatologists, and registered dietitians. The leadership team’s expertise in medical research and patient care has been instrumental in driving the company’s innovative approach to digestive health management.
Dr. Taylor says, “Our mission is to improve patients’ lives in 30 days so they can live without pain and multiple debilitating symptoms. We are the direct translation of years of research into easy, user-friendly programs people can use to live a more anti-inflammatory life. Innovate Calgary has walked this journey with us every step of the way and provided numerous connections and opportunities to promote LyfeMD’s success.”
