Collision will be bringing together tech companies, entrepreneurs, and world-class speakers in Toronto from June 17 to 20. Dubbed the “Olympics of Tech,” at its core Collision remains a conference for the freshest and brightest business ideas and this year there are outstanding companies from Alberta attending with Innovate Calgary’s support.
Innovate Calgary helps bridge the gap between discovery and innovation for startup companies while operating as a technology transfer and business-incubation centre for the University of Calgary.
We’re highlighting seven companies leading up to Collision. Today our spotlight is on O-Two Carbon Inc.
Company Overview
O-Two Carbon provides scalable solutions for converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into ethylene and ethanol, meeting the growing demand for these essential chemicals. Its electrochemical technology ensures optimal resource utilization and minimal environmental impact, driving the transition to a circular carbon economy. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and strategic partnerships, the company is committed to creating a more sustainable future.
Innovative Technology
O-Two Carbon is developing a patent-pending technology to separate and convert CO2 directly from industrial off-gas, thus avoiding energy intensive capture and transportation. With Alberta’s status as Canada’s carbon hub, where cumulative CO2 emissions total approximately 260 million tons per year, the companys’ technology offers a significant business opportunity by transforming this feedstock into marketable products with diverse applications.
The company’s key competitive advantage lies in its advanced membrane, catalyst, and integrated reactor design, which reduces overall energy consumption by about 35% compared to existing technologies. With further optimization and upscaling, its goal is to avoid 1 million tons of annual emissions by 2030, supporting Canada’s transition toward its net-zero commitment.
Funding and Development
O-Two Carbon has two flagship products – ethylene and ethanol, which are crucial for various industries. Ethylene is a fundamental building block for plastics, while ethanol plays a vital role in gasoline blending and the development of sustainable aviation fuel. Its state-of-the-art electrochemical processes efficiently convert waste CO2 into high-value ethylene and ethanol, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
The company is on the verge of demonstrating a pilot project in collaboration with a leading bioethanol producer in Red Deer, Alberta, showcasing the scalability and viability of its CO2 conversion technology.
In 2023, company co-founder and CEO, Shariful Kibria Nabil, received an Innovation Catalyst Grant funded by the Government of Alberta and managed by Innovate Calgary. This grant supports research-based startups and provides a two-year runway, $250,000 in funding, access to lab equipment, and professional development opportunities to develop and commercialize science-based products.
O-Two Carbon is also actively seeking potential investors and commercialization partners to scale up its technology and further develop its technical processes.
Expert Leadership
The company is led by Nabil, CEO and co-founder, and Md Golam Kibria, co-founder and Scientific Director.
“Our mission is to revolutionize how we approach carbon emissions and pave the way for a cleaner, brighter future for generations to come. At O-Two Carbon, we are dedicated to creating impactful solutions that address the pressing challenges of our time. We are grateful to our incredible team and partners like Innovate Calgary, whose belief in our vision has been instrumental in shaping our exciting evolution,” says Nabil.
What’s Next?
O-Two Carbon is poised to make a significant impact in the field of CO2 conversion and utilization. Its innovative approach to developing scalable solutions represents a major leap forward in addressing one of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
With the support of Innovate Calgary and the exposure gained from attending Collision, O-Two Carbon is well-positioned to lead the way in this field and drive advancements that will contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.
