Enhance Energy, a carbon management company, is among Alberta-based firms leading the way in sustainable energy solutions for the province and Canada.
With over 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions permanently sequestered in Central Alberta as of 2022, the Enhance team leverages experience in the planning, design, implementation, and operation of large-scale carbon capture and storage projects that manage Alberta’s industrial emissions safely and securely, including alternatives that utilize the CO2 for enhanced oil recovery.
Enhance was formed in 2008 with the vision of utilizing CO2 for enhanced oil recovery. Since then, the company has achieved numerous milestones, including contracting CO2 from North West Redwater upgrading and Nutrien (previously Agrium) in 2009 and signing funding agreements with the federal and provincial governments for the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line project in 2010. The ACTL pipeline received regulatory approval in 2011, paving the way for Enhance’s continued success.
The company believes that the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line Project is an innovative solution to a global challenge.
Up to 1.7 million tonnes of CO2 emissions are captured per year from refining and fertilizer manufacturing operations, transported down the world’s largest capacity anthropogenic CO2 pipeline, and sequestered permanently in reservoirs approximately two kilometres underground. Carbon utilization with “enhanced oil recovery” can revitalize some of Alberta’s existing, mature reservoirs in a safe, cost-effective, and small footprint manner.
Enhance’s success continued in 2013, when they acquired Clive Field ownership and ground was broken on the Sturgeon Refinery. In 2015, Enhance acquired the Innisfail Field, identifying it as a prospective EOR reservoir.
Development plans were optimized in 2016 to respond to the oil pricing environment. Wolf Carbon Solutions became an ACTL Partner in 2018, and field construction of the ACTL Pipeline commenced.
EOR development commenced in 2019, and the ACTL Pipeline and EOR development activity continued into 2020. Enhance and the other ACTL partners commemorated the first CO2 injection at Clive.
In 2022, Enhance unveiled plans for the Origins Project, a “world-scale carbon sequestration” experiment in Central Alberta.
“This venture has the potential to attract new low carbon industries to Alberta while providing a safe, secure, and certain solution for emissions mitigation for existing industries,” Kevin Jabusch, CEO of Enhance Energy, stated at the time. “At full scale this project is the equivalent of taking every vehicle in Alberta off the roads.”
Enhance’s mission is to play a key role in enabling the world’s transition to a zero-carbon economy, with a goal to be a world leader in utilizing and developing Carbon Capture and Storage. The company asserts that Alberta has enormous opportunities to generate value and contribute to Canada’s climate change goals.
The contributions of Enhance Energy have not gone unnoticed.
In April, the company won Adopter of the Year at the inaugural Alberta Cleantech Awards. The Adopter award recognizes “A leading organization, company, or group adopting or championing sustainable practices in their industry.”
