AgTech startup HEMPALTA is looking forward to sending optimized hemp hurd for use in hempcrete formulations to the U.S. residential construction market.
Hempcrete was recently approved as a material for use in such construction with the regulatory change in the U.S. to take full effect by 2024. Hempcrete is an environmentally friendly alternative to concrete, made from a mixture of hemp stalk hurds and lime binder.
The updated legislation is a significant event for the hemp sector and will enable HEMPALTA to add a product offering for the U.S. market. With a production facility in Calgary, HEMPALTA is utilizing advanced technology to produce hemp-based products that contribute to a healthier planet. Hemp is regarded as one of the world’s most sustainable crops as it is renewable, reusable and recyclable.
“We are applying new technologies to commercial-scale hemp processing and delivering a number of products. The optimized hemp hurd input for hempcrete is our latest offering but we expect more in the future as we innovate and as new markets open up. The hemp hurd input will be positioned to the U.S. residential construction market and will supplement our existing business,” said Darren Bondar, HEMPALTA’s CEO.
Bondar was the founder and CEO of Spiritleaf, Canada’s leading cannabis retail brand at the time he sold the chain in 2021.
HEMPALTA retails hemp-related products such as Hemp-Fresco food preservation pads, HempyCat kitty litter, animal bedding, Hemp-Pak soil enrichment and Hempzorb spill clean-up material. They’re carried by select retailers such as Sobeys, Safeway Canada and Calgary Co-op stores, as well as online through Amazon, Lowe’s and Loblaws.
The company continues with a crowdfunding push and is using FrontFrundr, Canada’s leading such online platform, to raise funds to drive growth in the company’s product creation and expand distribution.
Bondar and his team are doing in-person investor tours at the company’s production facility in Calgary this week and a virtual pitch event with FrontFundr on October 13th for those interested.
