How Alberta’s AltaML is Transforming Sectors with Applied AI

July 4, 2023 by Robert Lewis Leave a Comment

Artificial intelligence has catapulted itself from the realm of sci-fi fantasy into the very fabric of our everyday lives.

Amid this digital revolution, businesses worldwide grapple with the challenge of AI adoption.

AltaML was founded in 2018 to help organizations gain competitive advantages through applied artificial intelligence.

The startup is headquartered in Alberta, with offices in Edmonton and Calgary.

“It’s a no-brainer for AltaML to be in Calgary with all the decision makers, capital, and data concentrated here,” AltaML cofounder Cory Janssen once stated.

The firm seeks to bolster human potential by leveraging AI technology’s power to optimize performance, mitigate risk, and unlock new opportunities.

In a landscape currently rife with experimentation, AltaML emphasizes the practical application of AI to build tools that are put into active use. By streamlining the AI adoption journey, AltaML can offer solutions for both the private and public sectors.

Key areas AltaML targets with its AI solutions include healthcare, fintech, agtech, and other major industries.

For example, AI’s adoption in healthcare signifies a shift toward optimized patient care and streamlined operational processes. And, being stewards of tremendous data, financial institutions were early adopters of applied AI.

The tech is also playing a vital role in revolutionizing the agricultural and forestry sectors, with industry harnessing AI to yield invaluable insights and predictions that enhance operational efficiency and product yields. This includes the development of tools that predict wildfire outbreaks, drawing on decades of data to inform response mitigation strategies, as well as optimizing fuel consumption for forestry companies, leading to cost savings and environmental protection.

In our data-driven industry and culture of open-mindedness, AltaML does do a little of its own experimenting—employing a “little bets” philosophy to maximize the odds of success amidst the uncertainty that pervades their industry. By starting small, the risk of failure is minimized and the path to success becomes more flexible, allowing for innovative ideas to be scaled and iterated, according to the firm.

A knowledge-based company, AltaML says it is passionate about developing AI literacy, providing AI internships, and supporting youth STEM development. This approach, coupled with the Calgary upstart’s commitment to applying AI responsibly, leaves little doubt: the company is positioned as a Canadian catalyst for the advancing tech.

And as one of Canada’s fastest growing technology firms, it’s no surprise that AltaML has been growing its team through Tech Talent Canada Job Fair for years now—and continues to do so—a testament to the legacy of Techtalent.ca’s iconic hiring event.
