Meet Seven Calgary Startups Heading to Toronto for Collision Next Week

June 14, 2024 by Robert Lewis Leave a Comment

One of the world’s largest tech conferences returns to Toronto next week.

The venerable Collision, slated for June 17th through 20th at Enercare Centre, connects technology ecosystems across Canada with global opportunity through a week of events, sessions, and networking.

But at its core, Collision is a startup conference and this year there are hundreds of startups from across the globe exhibiting including over 50 from Alberta.

During the past week Calgary.tech has taken a deep dive into these seven Calgary startups that we’ll be cheering for and checking out at Collision.

Those attending Collision can drop by the University of Calgary booth, powered by Innovate Calgary and the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking, to connect with them all.

Deep Surface AI

Deep Surface AI addresses the fear of unnatural outcomes in medical aesthetics with 3D simulations, allowing patients to visualize results on their own faces. Their mission is to enhance patient and provider outcomes with personalized visualizations. Funded by UCeed, they develop precise tools through machine learning and statistical models of facial variation.

LyfeMD

LyfeMD empowers individuals to improve their health through nutrition and lifestyle changes with the LyfeMD app, developed by medical experts. The app offers personalized wellness programs and optional health coaching for managing digestive and inflammatory conditions. Supported by UCeed and Ascend, LyfeMD provides evidence-based, holistic health solutions and secured a $60,000 investment at the Women Innovation Summit.

MHCombiotics

MHCombiotic (MHC) combats antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by developing novel antibacterial agents with low resistance potential. Founded by Dr. Ali Pormohammad in 2021, MHC’s formulations also offer anti-biofilm, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory benefits. Supported by collaborations with top universities and third-party lab validations, MHC received significant funding and recognition, including the AICE award and Innovate Calgary’s Life Science Fellowship.

Nimble Science

Nimble Science revolutionizes gastrointestinal research with the SIMBA Capsule, a non-invasive, swallowable device for gut microbiome sampling. This technology provides unprecedented insights for accurate diagnostics and personalized treatments. In 2023, they raised $4 million to scale their platform, targeting a $75 billion market linked to small intestine dysbiosis and over 15 chronic diseases.

O-Two Carbon

O-Two Carbon converts CO2 into ethylene and ethanol using scalable electrochemical technology, minimizing environmental impact and supporting a circular carbon economy. With patent-pending tech to convert CO2 directly from industrial off-gas, O-Two aims to avoid 1 million tons of emissions annually by 2030. Supported by the Innovation Catalyst Grant, they are piloting projects and seeking investors to scale their sustainable solutions.

Quantized Technologies Inc. (QTi)

Quantized Technologies Inc. (QTi) is transforming digital communication with quantum technologies, offering quantum-secure solutions to modern cybersecurity challenges. Their mission is to develop essential communication technologies benefiting society. Supported by the University of Calgary and investors, QTi pioneers secure network connectivity, paving the way for secure quantum networks and a quantum internet.

Taylored Biotherapeutics

Taylored Biotherapeutics is a microbiome therapeutics company focused on developing new drugs to combat mental health illnesses. Utilizing advanced data platforms, machine learning, and patient-driven research, they create treatments targeting the gut microbiome to improve psychiatric conditions. Supported by partnerships with Netramark, the University of Calgary, and NRC-IRAP, they pioneer innovative, side-effect-free mental health therapies.
