The Cleantech Group has revealed its newest Cleantech 50 to Watch list, showcasing companies at the forefront of solving key environmental challenges. This annual list serves as a go-to resource for spotting early-stage ventures poised to disrupt the industry, with Canadian companies making a significant impact this year.
Among the featured Canadian innovators are two companies from Calgary: Ayrton Energy and Litus.
Ayrton Energy is breaking new ground in liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) technology. The company recently secured USD $6.8 million in seed funding, led by Clean Energy Ventures and BDC Capital. Ayrton’s LOHC system addresses two critical issues in the clean hydrogen sector: high transportation costs and inadequate storage infrastructure.
Founded by mechanical engineer Natasha Kostenuk and chemist Dr. Brandy Kinkead, Ayrton’s technology enables hydrogen storage and transport at room temperature, removing the need for expensive cryogenic or high-pressure systems.

Waste to Worth – Laying the Building Blocks of a Circular Carbon Economy
Carbon Upcycling is a carbon capture & utilization technology provider for the world’s hardest-to-abate industries – transforming CO2 and industrial waste materials into low-carbon cement alternatives.
Litus, founded in 2019 from research at the University of Calgary, is using nanotechnology to revolutionize lithium extraction. The company’s method harvests lithium directly from water-based sources with minimal environmental impact.
Earlier this year, Litus earned the Venture of the Year title at the Alberta Cleantech Awards, a recognition of its leadership in global innovation. Their technology promises unmatched lithium purity, double the recoverable amount, faster and more efficient processes, and significantly lower energy and environmental costs.
Anthony DeOrsey, Cleantech Group’s research manager, shared that the list’s selection process includes input from venture capitalists, corporate innovators, and startup experts from incubators and accelerators.
While Cleantech Group also releases the Global Cleantech 100 for established firms, the 50 to Watch list highlights emerging technologies and sheds light on the latest trends in the cleantech space.
