Calgary Invests in Tech Talent Development Through TECHNATION Partnership

December 9, 2024 by Newsdesk Leave a Comment

The Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund (OCIF) is committing $862,500 to TECHNATION to support 250 work-integrated learning (WIL) placements in Calgary’s tech sector over the next seven months. This investment aims to strengthen the city’s tech talent pipeline while promoting economic diversification.

“Calgary is continuing to demonstrate its leadership as a tech hub,” said Mayor Jyoti Gondek. “This investment fosters a welcoming and inclusive sector, crucial for a resilient and diverse economy.”

More than 80% of these placements will be within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with a focus on artificial intelligence. At least half of the participants will come from underrepresented groups, aligning with the city’s economic action plan, Uplook, which prioritizes innovation and inclusivity.

TECHNATION will leverage its Career Ready Program, which has facilitated over 20,000 placements nationwide since 2017. This initiative will also integrate funding from the Government of Canada’s Student Work Placement Program ($1.25 million), Alberta’s Workforce Development Grant ($1.13 million), and employer contributions totaling $720,000.

“This program builds confidence and skills for students while expanding access to tech talent for businesses,” said Matt Jones, Alberta’s Minister of Jobs, Economy and Trade. “It’s a win for students, small businesses, and the province.”

OCIF’s Brad Parry highlighted the collaboration between all levels of government and private investors, noting, “Capital follows talent, and this project ensures Calgary remains competitive.”

Angela Mondou, TECHNATION’s CEO, emphasized the initiative’s role in advancing Calgary’s tech ecosystem. “This program fuels growth while preparing the next generation of professionals in AI, cybersecurity, and emerging fields.”

Since its inception, OCIF has committed over $82 million to 31 projects, generating nearly $800 million in economic activity and creating over 3,000 jobs. This latest partnership reinforces Calgary’s reputation as a rising tech hub.
