Calgary-based Innova Cleantech has secured seed funding to accelerate its pioneering work in sustainable graphite and hydrogen production.
The investment, led by Weave VC and supported by prominent super angels from the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL), is set to propel Innova’s methane pyrolysis technology towards commercialization.
Innova’s innovative approach addresses a pressing global challenge: the need for a cleaner, secure, and cost-effective graphite supply. Currently, graphite production relies heavily on environmentally damaging processes and is predominantly sourced from China.
With demand expected to grow fivefold by 2050, Innova offers a transformative solution through its low-emission, locally sourced synthetic graphite.
The company’s proprietary methane pyrolysis technology operates at sub-1000°C temperatures, significantly reducing energy consumption. This dual-output process produces high-value synthetic graphite and clean hydrogen, with the flexibility to generate other carbon products like carbon nanotubes.
This positions Innova at the convergence of key industry trends, including decarbonization, critical mineral on-shoring, electrification, and clean hydrogen production.
Having achieved Technology Readiness Level 6, Innova is commissioning a pilot facility in Sturgeon County, Alberta. This pilot aims to validate its commercially viable graphite production for industrial and battery-grade applications. The company also boasts strategic partnerships with industry players and First Nations groups, positioning it for rapid growth within international green corridor initiatives.
Looking ahead, Innova plans to develop a first-of-a-kind facility by late 2025 and secure key agreements with industrial customers. The graphite market, valued in the billions, combined with hydrogen sales, sets Innova on a path toward achieving $100 million in annual recurring revenue.
