Calgary is making waves on the global innovation stage, securing its place as Canada’s fastest-growing startup ecosystem in 2025.
According to the latest Global Startup Ecosystem Index by StartupBlink, the city climbed 15 spots to rank 92nd worldwide—marking the largest jump among Canada’s top 10 ecosystems. Calgary also overtook Kitchener to become the fifth-ranked startup hub in the country, driven by a remarkable 30% year-over-year growth rate.
This ascent reflects a convergence of momentum across multiple fronts. From July 2021 to December 2023, Calgary’s tech ecosystem added $8.1 billion in value—an 83% increase over the previous period, significantly outpacing the global average of 46%.
That growth underscores Calgary’s emergence as a powerhouse of innovation and economic development. As reported by Calgary Economic Development, this surge in value creation places Calgary among the world’s top 50 emerging startup ecosystems.
A critical driver of this growth is the city’s rapidly expanding talent pool. Calgary has experienced a more than 78% increase in tech job postings over the past five years, helping establish its place among North America’s most dynamic innovation markets.
This expansion has been supported by a growing network of incubators, accelerators, and public-private partnerships, with organizations like Platform Calgary and the Calgary Innovation Coalition playing key roles in fostering a collaborative and supportive environment for startups.
Homegrown startups are also reinforcing Calgary’s growing reputation.
Companies like Arbor, founded in 2022, are tackling global challenges with local solutions—offering carbon management tools that enable businesses to track sustainability performance using region-specific impact metrics.
Meanwhile, Bidaya, a 2024 startup, uses AI to streamline the often cumbersome RFP process, helping professional services firms more efficiently discover projects and craft stronger proposals.
Both firms were recently featured in Calgary.tech’s roundup of local startups to watch in 2025.
While Toronto and Vancouver still hold higher global rankings—21st and 39th respectively—Calgary’s rate of acceleration puts it in a league of its own. The city’s emphasis on sectors like energy and cleantech leverages its historic industrial strengths while positioning it for a leadership role in Canada’s innovation future.
Calgary’s rise is further buoyed by bold initiatives like the new XPRIZE Canada Hub, which was recently announced as the first of its kind in the country. The Hub will help local startups scale breakthrough technologies with global impact, adding another dimension to the city’s innovation infrastructure.
With strong public and private sector alignment, a swelling base of skilled workers, and growing national and international recognition, Calgary is not just climbing the rankings—it’s setting the pace.
