With an aim to bring affordable, reliable, and clean energy to communities in every region of Canada, the federal government is investing in job-creating projects across the country.
Alberta’s potential for clean energy development, combined with the expertise of workers and community partners, is creating economic opportunities in the province, according to the government.
Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources this week announced $175 million in federal investments for 12 Alberta-based clean energy projects that will create “thousands of jobs” while delivering affordable energy to communities.
“The Government of Canada is investing to deliver more affordable, reliable, and clean power in every region of Canada,” stated Jonathan Wilkinson.
“The clean energy future is here,” added Minister of Labour Seamus O’Regan. “It’s creating good jobs and more prosperity in Alberta and across Canada.”
The 12 regional projects announced are all solar- and wind-based.
Projects include Buffalo Atlee, comprising four wind farm sites near Jenner. There is also the Lanfine Wind 1 project, a 150-MW onshore wind project in eastern Alberta expected to generate clean energy for up to 45,000 Alberta homes.
Meanwhile, ATCO intends to deploy the largest solar installation in an urban centre in Western Canada, located in southeast Calgary.
These projects are funded through the multi-billion-dollar Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program, which also funded nine Alberta-based solar and energy storage projects in July.
The government of Canada did not forecast precise job creation numbers, but stated that it is committed to developing a net-zero electricity system by 2035 and net-zero economy by 2050.
The recently released “Powering Canada Forward” lays out the government’s vision for transforming Canada’s electricity sector and meeting its commitment to decarbonizing the country’s electricity systems.
