A Calgary-born company steeped in a rich heritage of Danish craftsmanship is applying modern technology to innovate the interior design and construction industry.
Falkbuilt, named after the Danish word for “falcon,” uses a process it calls “digital component construction” in order to produce spaces using less materials, emissions, and waste.
The Alberta firm was founded in 2019 by longtime interior construction experts Barrie Loberg and Morgans Smed, whose father Kai moved his family to Canada in the 1950s, where he took over a cabinet making company and eventually expanded into millwork and interior construction.
Falkbuilt uses Echo Technology—established by Loberg—to create engineer-level models in the cloud, then streamlines the process from design through manufacturing all the way to installation.
The startup raised a sizeable round of funding just one year after launching, and later built on that capital by securing $35 million in Series A equity funding in 2022.
Falkbuilt’s momentum can also be captured via headcount growth. For example, the firm had just half a dozen employees with limited space, while today there are nearly 500 “Falkers” who work out of multiple offices and branches around the world, including a 90,000-square-foot flagship plant and warehouse in Calgary.
As a capstone to the company’s upward trajectory, Falkbuilt was recently recognized on as a Company-to-Watch through this year’s Technology Fast 50 program from Deloitte. The category highlights emerging Canadian tech companies that exhibit strong growth and show potential to be a future candidate of the Technology Fast 50 ranking.
The company’s tech platform applies to a variety of sectors, including commercial and offices spaces, healthcare buildings, retail shops, and industrial warehouses. Its work also spans a vast geography, from local projects in Canada to many in Antarctica, where Falkbuilt designed a research station among other spaces.
“We see a future for interior construction that’s not only better for people, it’s better for the planet,” the company states online. “And we never stop moving toward this vision.”
