A Calgary-based company is helping heavy industry monetize their waste heat.
Kanin Energy was cofounded by chief executive officer Janice Tran, chief development officer Dan Fipke, and chief technology officer Jake Bainbridge with a focus on capturing waste heat for power generation, district heating, and other industrial efficiency projects.
“Many industrial processes vent flue gas that contains a significant amount of wasted energy that can be converted into electricity,” the cleantech startup explains. “Kanin contributes carbon-free baseload electricity generation, thereby offsetting power produced from fossil fuels.”
Of all the energy produced and consumed, more than half can be lost in the form of waste heat during current industrial processes.
The ability to capture this wasted energy and produce “Waste Heat to Power” is viable in many different industries, Kanin says, including Glass, Metals, Biomass, Hydrogen, Natural Gas, and Cement.
Kanin’s partners can reduce their carbon impact, and another bonus is that they also don’t have to worry about efficiency projects that are “too small” for their core business.
The company plays the role of turnkey developer by offering bundled solutions for industrial customers that include the design, capital, construction, and operations for a project. The Alberta firm delivers projects end-to-end, covering project financing, engineering, construction, operation, and maintenance for the life of the project.
Kanin Energy was recently named to The Foresight 50, a list of Canada’s most investable cleantech companies.
And in October, CEO Tran was named to Oil and Gas Investor’s Forty Under 40 for her accomplishments providing WHP and other industrial decarbonization solutions across Canada.
Kanin Energy was founded in 2020.
