Calgary’s ZS2 Technologies has unveiled its second-generation (Gen 2) magnesium cement building materials, marking a major leap forward in sustainable construction for North America.
Backed by $9.9 million in grant funding and a growing portfolio of third-party certifications, the new product line promises to replace traditional gypsum, oriented strand board (OSB), and imported magnesium oxide (MgO) with a more durable, fire-resistant, and low-carbon alternative.
The Gen 2 platform builds on the company’s patented waste-to-cement technology, developed over the past five years. Unlike conventional materials that are susceptible to mold, moisture damage, and limited fire resistance, ZS2’s magnesium cement products offer verified performance against these persistent construction challenges.
“Builders are choosing ZS2 because they’re done waiting for MgO materials to arrive from overseas,” said Scott Jenkins, CEO of ZS2 Technologies. “We’ve redefined how magnesium cement is made, where it comes from, and how it performs.”
ZS2’s Gen 2 products are manufactured using Canadian industrial by-products, eliminating the quality inconsistencies and supply chain risks of traditional MgO, while cutting carbon emissions to a third of what is typical for conventional cement. Cement currently accounts for an estimated 7% of global CO₂ emissions.
A highlight of the new platform is ZS2TechTile™, a raised flooring system aimed at data centres and modular commercial builds. The product was recently classified as non-combustible under ASTM E136-19a, reinforcing the platform’s suitability for high-performance applications.
ZS2’s first-generation materials have already been used in high-profile projects including an Edmonton Krispy Kreme, a major Habitat for Humanity development in California, and Trico Homes’ Shawnessy Station in Calgary. With Gen 2 now entering commercial production, ZS2 is poised to supply builders across North America with materials that meet strict fire codes and sustainability mandates.
The announcement comes as ZS2 Technologies is named a finalist for Venture of the Year: Scaleup at the 2025 Alberta Cleantech Awards—a recognition of the company’s rapid rise and growing impact.
“Gen 2 is not a concept,” added Jenkins. “It’s certified, spec’d into projects, and ready to meet the demands of today’s building industry.”
As climate resilience, emissions reduction, and domestic supply chains become top priorities for the construction sector, ZS2 is positioning its next-generation platform as a reliable and scalable solution for the buildings of tomorrow.
