Calgary’s Alethea Medical Empowers Doctors with AI Platform for Better Care

January 3, 2023 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

In August of last year, Alethea Medical launched a mobile app that would bring to light the “ingenious” technology it had been developing.

Alethea Medical uses artificial intelligence in the medical diagnostics field, where its e-consult platform provides doctors with predictive support and expedited specialist communication, according to a statement from the Calgary-based startup.

The company’s app allows family physicians and nurse practitioners to record patient images, access the AI Decision Support tool for ENT and Dermatology, and send advice requests to specialists.

“Our technology enables clinicians to record, store, and share images using our digital endoscope and platform,” the company explains.

And each of these features “can help a Family Physician better understand a patient’s condition, and accelerate treatment at the primary care level,” affirms the company, which was founded by Dr. Devon Livingstone, a local Otolaryngologist, in 2019.

While starting his practice, Livingstone saw firsthand the negative implications that long waitlists have on patient care.

He thus became motivated to create a solution that would help resolve long wait times and get patients faster access to care. Through Alethea, he is achieving his aim.

“Through our platform, an e-consult can be performed with our team of specialists,” states the company. “The referring physician will receive same-day recommendations for treatment and follow-up, without the need to wait months or years for a traditional consultation.”

Last year, Technation recognized Alethea with a 2022 Ingenious Award in the AI category for their work with diagnostic artificial intelligence.

The winners were announced as part of the CIO’s Future of Digital Innovation Summit & Awards Canada hosted by IDC Canada.

Alethea continues to develop its technology, which currently decreases specialist wait times by an average of 50%, based on thousands of e-consults already performed through the app.

More than 16,000 patients have been helped so far, according to the startup.

To serve even more doctors and patients, Alethea is hiring.
