Fillip Raises $5 Million Seed Round Led by Staircase Ventures

October 11, 2023 by Robert Lewis Leave a Comment

Calgary fintech startup Fillip has closed its $5 million seed round led by Toronto-based Staircase Ventures.

Founded in 2018 by former CDL-Rockies’ site lead Alice Reimer, Fillip calls itself the first digital payment platform built for business fleets.

Fillip was named one of 10 homegrown Calgary startups to watch in 2023 after winning the top prize of $250K at the inaugural Calgary Fintech Awards in 2022.

With this latest injection of funding, Fillip is quickly becoming the digital payment leader for Canada’s on-the-road business expenses.

With thousands of active drivers in Canada and processing volume growing at 300% year over year, Reimer says the partnership with Staircase Ventures marks another significant milestone in the company’s journey to revolutionize the future of the fuel card industry.

Reimer is is also looking forward to working closely with Staircase Ventures founder, Janet Bannister, who will serve as an advisor and member of the Board of Directors. Fillip marks Staircase’s first early-stage investment in the Canadian tech industry from their new $34-million fund.

“The funding from Staircase Ventures will provide the resources and strategic support needed to accelerate Fillip’s expansion and bring our digital technologies to even more businesses, helping them save time and optimize and track their fuel and maintenance expenses,” says Reimer.

“We know the need for fuel management, business efficiency, and digitization is more important than ever before and we are laser-focused on scaling Fillip Fleet and providing a modern solution for businesses in these inflationary times.”

Fillip provides businesses, of all sizes, with a digital fuel payment and tracking solution allowing them to save time, money, simplify accounting and optimize fuel and maintenance expenses. Fillip’s innovative software provides increased transparency, fraud reduction, and real-time visibility and control of company fuel cards. The Fillip app also provides drivers with live maps helping them locate gas stations and savings nearby. It operates across Canada today, and can be used anywhere Visa is accepted.

Bannister is known for her strategic investments in disruptive tech companies, and also her commitment to nurturing and developing founders and their teams. In addition to funding, Staircase Ventures provides an extensive suite of services to accelerate founders’ development and help them perform at their best, including CEO coaching, peer support groups, and health and wellness programs.

“I was really drawn to Fillip Fleet’s innovative approach to mobility solutions – no one else is providing this kind of software to the fleet industry in Canada,” says Bannister. “And once I met Alice and the team, I was sold. They are a dynamic, resilient and forward-thinking team. Alice Reimer is a trailblazer and has a track record of building and leading successful companies,” says an enthusiastic Bannister.
