Alberta Invests Over $33 Million Across 13 Projects Innovating Province’s Energy Grid

April 8, 2024 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

Calgary’s CruxOCM, a pioneer in autonomous operations control management software for the energy sector, recently received a significant investment from Emissions Reduction Alberta.

“We are excited to receive this investment from Emissions Reduction Alberta, which will propel our efforts to innovate and catalyze positive change within the energy sector,” remarked Adam Marsden, Chief Revenue Officer at CruxOCM.

The investment was among a total of $33.7 million announced across 13 projects focused on technologies that will reduce emissions and contribute to a more flexible energy grid in Alberta.

“We are investing in innovative energy projects that will make Alberta’s power grid more reliable,” said Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas.

The funding amounts range from $500,000 to $6.5 million, and each project will be piloted or deployed within Alberta.

“This investment supports the modernization of Alberta’s energy systems,” stated ERA CEO Justin Riemer, “allowing us to demonstrate new technologies that will improve the competitiveness and efficiency of Alberta’s energy systems and reduce our emissions.”

For example, Graph Energy is receiving $2.5M for its project boosting fuel efficiency with graphene ultra-capacitor energy storage for diesel and natural gas generators, while Atlas Power Technologies is combining a super-capacitor-based energy storage system with a hydroelectric generating facility in Alberta, a project for which it received $6.5M.

The Landmark Group of Companies received $3.3M to enable mass adoption of “net zero homes,” while X-energy Canada is conducting an initial feasibility study regarding the potential benefits of deploying a modular nuclear reactor at a repurposed fossil fuel power plant site.

The 13 projects are estimated to deliver combined annual GHG reductions of 119 thousand tonnes.

This funding is also expected to create 830 person-year jobs in Alberta, according to a statement from the government, and have a $125 million GDP impact in the province by 2025.

For more than 14 years, ERA has been investing to accelerate the development and adoption of innovative clean technology solutions.

Since established in 2009, the ERA has committed over $900 million toward almost 300 projects which are estimated to deliver cumulative GHG reductions of 42 million tonnes by 2030.
