Calgary ranks among the top technology ecosystems in North America, according to the latest report from Startup Genome and the Global Entrepreneurship Network.
The 2024 Global Startup Ecosystem Report, released for London Tech Week, analyzed data from more than four million companies across 300 ecosystems around the world to provide “compelling new insights and deep knowledge about startup trends around the world.”
The insights and trends are in addition to the report’s flagship offering, a ranking system of innovation ecosystems.
Recognized as the 4th most major tech ecosystem in Canada, Calgary ranks 26th in North America, according to the report, though it failed to make the cutoff for the top 40 global list.
“Calgary has long been defined as a city of community builders who rise to tackle any challenge put in front of us,” stated Terry Rock, CEO of Platform Calgary. “That Calgary spirit is on full display within our technology ecosystem.”
Calgary’s tech ecosystem grew more than 200% in value from 2021 through 2023, according to Platform Calgary, Calgary Innovation Coalition, and Calgary Economic Development, who jointly celebrated the region’s ranking in the Genome report.
Now known as a hub for innovation, it was not long ago that Calgary “wasn’t on the map” as a destination for startups, points out Brad Parry, chief of Calgary Economic Development.
“But with talent and investment flowing into Calgary, we have all the right pieces in place for our innovation economy to continue its pace as one of the fastest growing tech-hubs in the world and allow us to continue competing on the global stage,” he posits.
“All of the progress made in recent years has been because of one of the most dynamic and collaborative communities on the planet,” agreed Rock. “And the best is yet to come.”
Toronto-Waterloo, Vancouver, and Montreal placed ahead of Calgary.
