A company out of Calgary is utilizing artificial intelligence to help Canadians land work.
Alberta’s SageMaster AI offers a digital platform built to reduce friction and boost efficiency when it comes to searching for jobs.
The startup was launched by engineer Neji Tawo, who previously worked on AI innovation built around Amazon’s Alexa product.
“Before SageMaster AI, people were applying blindly,” Tawo informed Innovate Calgary (SageMaster recently joined the organization’s Social Innovation Hub). “Now, they’re doing it intelligently.”
Tawo said he was “literally homeless” following a pivot from Amazon that put Alexa innovators out of work. Initially, he began working on an AI-powered legal tool but struggled to scale the product. From there, he honed in on the jobs market, which he considered ripe for disruption.
“The platform analyzes your resume, finds job opportunities that match your experience, and even highlights the skills you need to improve,” Tawo says. “Instead of wasting time on jobs you’re not suited for, you can focus on the ones where you’re a great fit.”
Beyond merely analyzing existing resumes, SageMaster will even craft one for you from scratch.
“We are continuously innovating,” says Tawo. “Now, we’re not just showing you jobs—we’re helping you apply smarter. With one click, you get a custom resume and cover letter tailored to the job posting.”
Currently, SageMaster boasts more than 1,000 users, and Tawo is seeking to expand that figure by striking partnerships with post-secondary institutions to help students transition into the workforce.
“We just had a meeting with a university in Ontario with 11,000 students,” he shared. “We’re onboarding them so they can use SageMaster AI to find internships and first jobs.”
One question is how HR will perceive applicants whose resume was auto-generated and sent to hundreds of companies—but as AI disrupts virtually everything (including on the hiring side), time will most certainly reveal the answer.
For individuals, SageMaster’s service costs $20 per month or $200 per year.
Innovate Calgary was founded in 1986 to support the University of Calgary’s innovation community. The Social Innovation Hub launched in 2023.
