Calgary’s E3 Lithium have successfully produced lithium metal batteries using Alberta brine, marking a major step toward localizing the lithium battery supply chain in Canada.
The milestone was achieved as part of the companies’ ongoing Joint Development Agreement with Pure Lithium, which integrates E3 Lithium’s Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology with Pure Lithium’s proprietary Brine to Battery™ process. More than 80 lithium metal battery cells have been manufactured using lithium concentrate derived from E3 Lithium’s brines.
“The production of lithium metal batteries from E3’s Alberta brine marks a significant milestone and outlines our ability to produce multiple battery-grade lithium products,” said Chris Doornbos, President and CEO of E3 Lithium.
“The successful integration of E3’s lithium brine resource and DLE technology with Pure Lithium’s innovative technology demonstrates our commitment to developing a secure, reliable, and local lithium battery supply chain.”
The collaboration has defined an optimized lithium chloride concentrate, balancing lithium concentration and impurity levels for battery-grade performance. Pure Lithium is now conducting rigorous industry-standard testing on the batteries, with results expected once the analysis is complete.
The battery testing program is expected to conclude in Q2 2025.
