Rogers has become the first internet provider in Canada to roll out WiFi 7, debuting next-generation connectivity that promises faster speeds, improved reliability, and better performance across multiple devices. The technology is now available in select areas of Calgary, with plans for a national rollout later this year.
“Canadians deserve the best connectivity experience, and this is the first in a series of launches this year to bring the latest technology to more Canadians,” said Bret Leech, President of Residential Services at Rogers. “WiFi 7 delivers more speed, better coverage and better adaptability for an ultra-reliable, ultra-low lag experience.”
According to Rogers, the new Rogers Xfinity router is the company’s most powerful to date. Capable of delivering multi-gig symmetrical speeds over WiFi, it supports connections for more than 200 devices simultaneously. The router is available exclusively with the Rogers Xfinity Pro 4G plan, which offers up to 4 Gbps download and 1 Gbps upload speeds. The company says these are the fastest speeds available on any Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) network worldwide.
The launch comes amid a surge in internet usage across Canadian households. Over the past five years, Rogers reports, home data consumption has climbed more than 200% as Canadians increasingly rely on high-speed connections to stream content, game, work remotely, and connect with others.
The Calgary deployment marks a milestone in the evolution of broadband infrastructure in Alberta. Rogers says the upgrade will allow homes to take full advantage of emerging applications that require ultra-low latency and high bandwidth, such as cloud gaming, 4K video streaming, and advanced smart home technologies.
The company plans to expand WiFi 7 availability across other provinces throughout 2025.
