Calgary-based energy tech innovator PrePad has been awarded the 2025 Meritorious Award for Engineering Innovation in the Digital Oilfield category by Hart Energy.
The award recognizes PrePad’s Completions Module, the first completions process simulator designed to help operators simulate and compare well decisions in seconds.
“We’re honoured to receive this year’s Meritorious Award for Engineering Innovation,” said Sean Hervo, Co-Founder and CEO of PrePad. “It’s a powerful recognition of the value PrePad brings to the energy sector by optimizing well design, cost management, and operational efficiency.”
The innovation impressed Hart Energy’s judges, who assessed entries from across the industry. “Congratulations to PrePad,” said Darren Barbee, a Senior Managing Editor at Hart Energy, which runs the competition annually. “The ability to integrate cost, time, and production interdependencies in a single, user-friendly product was recognized by judges as significant for the industry.”
PrePad’s recognition reflects not only the strength of its technology but also the city’s growing profile in the energy tech sector. PrePad has been named one of Calgary.tech’s startups to watch in 2025, underlining its emergence as a key player in the local innovation ecosystem.
Founded in 2021 by former Shell engineers, PrePad has quickly established itself as a leader in drilling and completions optimization. The company’s Completions Module is a cloud-based SaaS platform that enables engineers to model real-world trade-offs under complex, constrained scenarios—accelerating decision-making and improving capital efficiency.
Brandon Eidson, PrePad’s Co-Founder, President, and Chief Product Officer, noted: “Our software empowers energy companies, before they’ve spent any money, to model real-world trade-offs under complex, constrained scenarios. The award highlights the significant impact our technology is having in optimizing completions workflows.”
The energy tech startup has also made significant progress on the funding front. In late 2024, the company was selected for Chevron Technology Ventures’ Catalyst Program, aimed at accelerating technology innovation in the energy sector. In April 2025, PrePad announced it had raised C$3.9 million in seed funding, capital that is being used to expand its platform and grow its North American footprint. The company has also been named one of Calgary’s Top 50 Most Scalable Startups this year by Scale Up Canada and Calgary Economic Development.
PrePad’s headquarters in Calgary underscores the city’s role as a hub for energy technology innovation, while its clients—including Chevron, Devon Energy, Coterra Energy, Shell Canada, Whitecap Resources, Birchcliff Energy, Teine Energy, and Cygnet Energy—highlight the company’s ability to scale across the energy sector.
