Platform Calgary’s Home Wins Governor General’s Medal in Architecture

June 19, 2026 by Robert Lewis Leave a Comment

The building that houses Platform Calgary has earned one of Canada’s highest architectural honours.

The Parkade of the Future, located in Calgary’s East Village, has been named a recipient of the 2026 Governor General’s Medals in Architecture. The national awards, presented by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and the Canada Council for the Arts, recognize outstanding design in recently completed projects by Canadian architects.

Designed by 5468796 Architecture and Kasian Architecture, Interior Design and Planning, the Parkade of the Future was commissioned by Calgary Municipal Land Corporation and the Calgary Parking Authority.

While it serves today as a 510-stall parkade, the building was designed with a much longer future in mind.

RAIC describes the project as a rethinking of conventional parking infrastructure, built for adaptability and long-term resilience. The structure can be converted over time into office, residential, or light industrial space as transportation patterns change and demand for parking evolves.

Its design includes generous ceiling heights, clear spans, and universal load-bearing capacity to support future reuse. An elliptical helix form allows the floors to rise gradually without conventional ramps, while also bridging an underground light rail easement and reclaiming valuable site area.

For Calgary’s innovation community, the building is best known as the home of the Platform Innovation Centre, a central gathering place for founders, investors, startups, and ecosystem partners.

At street level, the Parkade of the Future includes public amenities such as a café, basketball court, exhibition courtyard, and the Platform Innovation Centre, helping activate the surrounding East Village neighbourhood rather than simply storing vehicles above it.

The project’s removable recycled aluminum shroud was also designed with future flexibility in mind, allowing for potential balcony integration if the building is converted to other uses.

In its comments, the Governor General’s Medals jury praised the project for transforming a utilitarian building type into adaptable urban infrastructure. The jury noted how the parkade anticipates changing mobility systems while opening the ground plane to public life and supporting community engagement.

The recognition places Calgary alongside a national list of 11 winning projects from across Canada, ranging from residential homes and parks to civic and community infrastructure.

For Calgary’s tech sector, the award is a reminder that innovation ecosystems are shaped not only by companies, capital, and talent, but also by the physical spaces where people gather.

Platform Calgary’s home was built to serve today’s startup community while leaving room for the city’s future to take shape around it. That combination of flexibility, civic purpose, and design ambition has now earned it national recognition.
