Calgary’s growing health technology and life sciences ecosystem will take centre stage this September when Life Sciences Week returns to Alberta.
Running from September 21 through 25, the province-wide initiative connects industry leaders, policymakers, researchers, innovators and students. Calgary’s headline contribution arrives Wednesday, September 23, when the YYC Life Sciences Spotlight takes over Platform Calgary.
Scheduled from 8:00am to 4:00pm, the program will bring together life sciences companies, researchers, investors, government representatives and ecosystem organizations. Panels, interactive sessions and company showcases will explore commercialization, investment, partnerships, manufacturing and clinical development.
One featured session will examine why major health challenges may require more than incremental innovation. Running from 10am to 11am, Bold Ideas, Breakthrough Impact will consider how challenge-based innovation, digital health and entrepreneurship can turn ambitious ideas into practical solutions.
The panel is scheduled to include XPRIZE Health’s Annika Anderson, Labfront co-founder Jordan Masys and Cloud DX founder Anthony Kaul. An XPRIZE coffee hour later in the afternoon will allow attendees to continue the conversation.
At 1:00pm, Building Teams That Advance Breakthrough Science will focus on the people behind research-driven ventures. Hosted by UCeed, Sid Gunamalai and Pete Santosham, the session will explore what makes a founding team attractive to early-stage investors and how researchers can add commercial capabilities through co-founders, advisors and industry partners. Panelists have yet to be announced.
Together, these discussions reflect a central challenge for Calgary’s life sciences sector: scientific discovery is only the beginning. Reaching the market also requires specialized talent, financing, validation and collaboration across academia, industry and healthcare.
Following the daytime program, Life Sciences Week plans an evening gathering celebrating Calgary’s life sciences community.
The YYC Life Sciences Spotlight takes place September 23 at Platform Calgary. Registration and the developing schedule are available through the Life Sciences Week calendar.
