For finance teams managing equipment, property and vehicle leases, the accounting can become a sprawling exercise in spreadsheets, changing terms and recurring calculations.
Calgary’s Black Owl Systems is building software to bring that work into a single, structured process.
Founded by father-and-son accountants Greg and Derek Kautz, the company provides lease accounting software designed to support IFRS 16 and ASC 842 reporting. Its platform handles calculations, journal entries and disclosures while helping teams maintain the underlying lease records.
The opportunity becomes particularly clear when businesses manage leases across multiple entities, currencies and asset types. Changes to those agreements can create additional work for teams trying to keep financial reporting consistent.
Black Owl’s approach connects lease administration with accounting, allowing the same information to support portfolio oversight and financial reporting. The company serves both lessees and lessors.
In December 2025, Black Owl announced financing led by Graphite Ventures, with participation from Metiquity Ventures and finance executives. The company said the investment would support engineering and sales expansion across North America.
Its customer roster includes Flair Airlines. According to a company case study, the carrier went live on Black Owl in January 2026, using the platform to maintain lease schedules and generate journal entries and disclosure reports.
Black Owl Systems is among Platform Calgary’s 2026 Launch Party Top 10. Launch Party, presented by Float, takes place November 5 at the Platform Innovation Centre.
