Five Innovators Leveraging Data and Technology to Help Canadians Live Longer and Better

May 30, 2024 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

Thousands of dollars are on the line along with exposure to a global audience and technology investors for 30 companies that have made the final cut for the Inventures Startup Pitch Competition.

Inventures 2024 is finally here and a select group of companies have been identified as the finalists for this year’s pitch competition.

There are six competitions, each with a $10,000 prize and five finalists who will pitch live on stage. The six competitions mirror the program tracks of this year’s conference.

One competition track is themed “Live Long, Live Well,” which covers startups utilizing technology to improve wellness and healthcare in Canada and beyond.

In this track the five finalists are Healda, AiimSense, CalmWave, Wound3, and Theresagenics Pharma. Below, a glance at the competitors.

AiimSense

Founded by scientists from the University of Waterloo, AiimSense develops portable brain scanners that turn expensive head scans with specialized procedures into real-time monitoring routine and preventative care at patient’s bedside.

The company’s focus is to significantly improve the outcome and cost of strokes and traumatic brain injuries by bringing diagnostic imaging and monitoring to the point of first response.

CalmWave

CalmWave wants to “Turn up the signal; shut down the noise.”

Bedside vital signs equipment and other medical devices are critical tools for clinicians, but generate a lot of unnecessary noise in the ICU, according to the company. The med-tech startup’s goal is to eliminate all non-actionable alarms by using each patient’s unique physiological information combined with advanced AI algorithms.

Wound³

Medical imaging upstart Wound³ looks to leverage breakthrough technologies to develop industry-leading medical innovations with an eye toward improving patient care.

Cofounders Connor Povoledo and Jacob Damant believe that accurate, actionable data is the cornerstone of improving wound management, enabling care providers to make proactive and informed decisions to optimize treatment plans.

Healda

Launched in 2019, Healda has developed hemostatic agents and active and smart wound dressings based on biopolymers and hydrocolloid compounds.

Focusing on the required combinations of operating rooms and trauma, the company has produced intelligent and biodegradable hemostatic agents that effectively prevent bleeding and significantly affect wound healing.

Theresagenics Pharma

With a curiously limited online presence, the stealthy pharmaceutical technology startup Theresagenics is certainly one to watch pitch at Inventures 2024 in Calgary.
