Soilgenic Innovates Fertilizer Industry with Climate-Smart Tech

February 3, 2023 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

Building on Alberta’s growing clean tech economy is a slew of local ag-tech startups focused on sustainability through innovation.

One of these young companies is Soilgenic, which is developing a suite of “enhanced efficiency fertilizer technologies.”

“Fertilizers are responsible for feeding the world, but nutrients can be tied up in the soil or lost to the environment contributing to climate change and nutrient loss that contributes to red tides and aquatic dead zones,” explains the startup.

Soilgenic says its suite of patents include new innovations that will significantly improve application, product performance, as well as a lower overall cost for both upstream manufacturers and downstream retail applications.

The company’s current “climate-smart” technologies include Diamond-N and Knifed-N, which each function as novel formulations for specific industry uses. The latest formula is Visio-N, targeted for use in cooler climates.

“We are excited to bring this new technology forward to assist the fertilizer industry and to help extend the use of nitrogen fertilizers and improve nutrient use efficiency,” the company stated recently.

Soilgenic’s nitrogen tech sets a “new standard in quality and performance while breaking through the price barrier to provide the best return on investment for farmers around the world,” the startup believes, providing solutions for both above and below ground.

In addition to nitrogen technologies, the company’s “Phosgain Efficiency Technology” improves phosphate fertilizers by enhancing the availability of phosphate over a longer period of time, “allowing the crop to utilize more phosphate with less tie up in the soil,” according to a statement from the fledging disruptor.

Soilgenic is based in Calgary and is participating in the THRIVE II Canada Accelerator, a program which accelerates innovation and technology by advancing startups with potential to promote industry sustainability and reduce environmental impact while giving farmers tools to increase yield and productivity.

The company was founded in 2021 by Jeff Ivan, who noted he was “extremely delighted” to have his startup selected as a cohort member for THRIVE.
