Calgary Entrepreneurs Want to Power One Million Homes with Solar

June 16, 2023 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

Sustainability and innovation intersect at Zeno Renewables, a Calgary-based residential solar solutions provider.

The Alberta company is riding a wave of eco-conscious change, armed with entrepreneurial ambition and technology.

Established by co-CEOs Gursh Bal and Kai Fahrion, Zeno Renewables is eager to position itself near the forefront of Canada’s green transition.

The duo, recently named among the Calgary Top 40 Under 40 by Avenue Magazine, envisage a cleaner, sustainable future through the widespread adoption of solar energy.

In reflecting on the Top 40 honour, Fahrion noted the significant strides made in diversifying Alberta’s energy landscape, providing affordable residential solar solutions, and creating jobs—all in a region historically tethered to oil and gas.

“We’ve been able to provide solar solutions in a province that’s heavily focused on fossil fuels,” Fahrion stated in November. “We’re changing the game in Alberta when it comes to diversifying its energy portfolio and allowing individuals to have access to affordable residential solar solutions . . . while creating jobs for the economy.”

Zeno Renewables, previously known as Virtuoso Electric, first embarked on its green energy mission in 2015.

Bal and Fahrion, then working at Concept Electric, decided to set out to establish their own venture. The friends dared to dream big, despite having no prior business experience.

Seven years later, that dream is taking tangible shape and generating ripples across Western Canada.

In terms of impact, Zeno’s solar solutions have been installed on almost 2,000 homes, a figure equivalent to more than four million trees planted and a lifetime savings of nearly $70 million for customers. Their services extend beyond solar panel installation to encompass electric vehicle charging and battery storage systems as well.

Zeno is making solar energy not only accessible to homeowners but also attractive through its use of custom-tailored solutions and expertise. And in addition to residential settings, Zeno Renewables is aiding commercial entities in adopting solar energy solutions too.

Calling himself “just an electrician” last year, Bal said Zeno is composed of “A lot of really good people trying to do something good—and it seems to be working.”

The team, which joins a slew of solar upstarts across Western Canada, is aiming to install solar solutions on over one million homes by 2040.
