This week 10 tech startups from across Canada pitched their business to a panel of judges for the chance to secure grant prizes at DMZ’s annual Black Innovation Summit.
Designed to bring together the Black tech ecosystem and celebrate Black excellence, this year’s Black Innovation Summit theme addressed rapid tech advancements and global economic uncertainty, empowering attendees with the tools to navigate today’s startup landscape and build resilience in an ever-changing market.
Among the Summit’s curated activities was a startup pitch competition exclusively for Black founders which awarded $55,000 in total grant prizes to the top three pitch finalists.
Calgary’s Woveo, a digital credit union-like fintech platform that offers low-cost credit and helps users build credit, was named the second-place winner, taking home $15,000.
A 2022 Calgary Fintech Award winner, Woveo secured a $2.3 million seed round in 2023 from investors BKR Capital, Relay Ventures, and Northpine Foundation.
Woveo was co-founded by Jonah Chininga, James Muhato and Sergio Fernandez.
