Amii Collaborates with Clio to ‘Significantly Expand Applications of AI in Law’

July 4, 2024 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

This week, a partnership was revealed between Clio and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute.

Clio, a Vancouver-born provider of cloud-based legal technology, will be collaborating with the Edmonton institute, known as Amii, on various projects oriented around a “shared commitment to innovation and excellence in legal tech.”

Specifically, the B.C. firm intends to tap the expertise of Amii to further enhance its product offerings with artificial intelligence.

“This partnership marks a significant step forward in our AI initiatives,” believes Clio’s chief of technology, Jonathan Watson.

Watson says Clio is “excited to integrate AI in a way that optimizes legal processes, making advanced technology a seamless and valuable tool for law professionals everywhere.”

“At Clio, our goal extends beyond advancing technological boundaries,” the CTO says. “We are dedicated to applying sophisticated AI solutions to create tangible benefits that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of legal practice.”

With longtime headquarters in Vancouver, it’s with noting that Clio was originally founded in Edmonton in 2008, making the partnership a natural fit.

Indeed, Clio chief Jack Newton pursued his master’s degree in machine learning under Amii Fellow and Canada CIFAR AI Chair Russ Griener.

This longstanding linkage “connects Clio’s leadership directly with Amii’s academic and technological prowess,” according to a statement from Newton’s company.

Moving forward, the collaboration is expected to “bolster the economic and academic synergy within Edmonton and beyond.”

“Amii is excited to partner with Clio, a notable trailblazer in legal technology, on a project that will significantly expand the applications of AI in law,” said Cam Linke, Amii’s CEO.

Founded all the way back in 2002, the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute is the oldest AI institute in the country and one of the nation’s three centres of AI excellence as part of the Pan-Canadian AI strategy.

“This collaboration represents a convergence of our mutual dedication to pushing boundaries in technology,” Linke continued. “By combining our AI research capabilities with Clio’s industry-leading platform, we are set to achieve substantial advancements in how legal services are delivered, aiming to enhance both the practitioner’s and client’s experience.”
