Alberta Emerges as Top Destination for International Engineering Technology Professionals

August 7, 2024 by Newsdesk Leave a Comment

A recent survey conducted by the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET) has highlighted Alberta’s attractiveness as a destination for internationally trained engineering technology professionals.

Nearly three-quarters (73.53%) of the survey respondents arrived in Alberta upon their first entry into Canada. Among those who initially settled in other provinces like Ontario and British Columbia, many relocated to Alberta for better employment opportunities.

An overwhelming 92.65% of respondents expressed satisfaction with working in Alberta, citing reasons such as ample job opportunities, a robust economy, proximity to the oil and gas industry, and the absence of a Canadian work experience requirement for ASET designation.

Alberta became the first Canadian province to remove the Canadian work experience requirement for engineering technology professionals, thanks to ASET’s initiatives. This progressive move has since been adopted by other provinces.

“At ASET, we realized how difficult it is for internationally trained professionals who are qualified in their countries of origin to get recognized in Canada,” said ASET CEO Barry Cavanaugh. “With Canada facing a significant deficit in STEM talent and one-fifth of our national population on the brink of retirement, we need the skills and expertise of internationally trained professionals more than ever.”
