Calgary Libraries Hit by Cyber Attack After Launch of Tech-Forward Prototype Hub

October 15, 2024 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

Calgary’s public libraries suffered a cybersecurity incident in the days following the launch of “Prototype: Skyview,” a new space to support the growing community in the region’s northeast.

Skyview launched this month to understand and address local community needs while developing new services that can benefit the Calgary Public Library system.

“We are pleased to see additional Library supports and services in our growing community,” Ward 5 Councillor Raj Dhaliwal stated recently. “I am happy to see the Library creating new ways to serve our diverse population and invest in digital literacy and supports for Calgarians.”

The model focuses on digital services and technology access, acting as “a hub for testing and community.”

“Prototype: Skyview will allow us to test new ideas, meet with community members, and enhance Library service that will not only benefit the Skyview community, but may also inspire opportunities that we can spread across the system to other locations,” stated the library’s chief executive, Sarah Meilleur.

The space includes computer lending, printing and faxing services, virtual conferencing pods, bookable meeting rooms, and public programs.

“Calgary is growing at an incredible rate and the Library needs to be able to grow alongside our community,” added Meilleur. “Providing accessible and impactful learning spaces is critical to the future success of our city.”

The announcement, made on October 9, was followed by a cyber attack on Friday the 11th.

“Calgary Public Library is experiencing a significant service disruption due to a recent cybersecurity breach,” read a posting on the organization’s website.

The incident, which was not outlined in detail, forced the library to temporarily close all branches as well as shut down access to servers.

All Calgary Public Library locations will re-open on Wednesday, October 16, with regular hours but “modified service.” More specifically, patrons will have access to Library services “that do not require technology.”

The Library stated that it intends to “complete a thorough investigation” of the matter.
