Big Investment from Calgary’s F3 Networks Fuels Fibre-Optic Expansion in Red Deer

May 9, 2025 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

TELUS and F3 Networks announced this week that PureFibre services will soon be available to 90% of homes in Alberta’s third most populous city.

Fuelled by a “historic” $168 million investment from F3, the project is set to utilize more than 400 kilometres of fibre optic cable to deliver reliable, high-speed internet to residents of Red Deer, according to a statement from the Canadian companies.

“We’re incredibly proud to work alongside F3 Networks, AFL and the City of Red Deer to bring TELUS PureFibre services to the community,” stated Shazia Zeb Sobani, Vice-president of Customer Solutions Delivery West at TELUS.

“This collaborative effort is about more than building infrastructure, it’s about empowering residents and businesses with the tools they need to thrive in today’s digital world,” Sobani continued.

Calgary’s F3 Networks is a privately held Canadian telecommunications company specializing in fibre infrastructure solutions.

“F3 Networks is proud to bring fibre connectivity to the City of Red Deer,” commented Jordan Young, CEO of F3.

“This isn’t just about faster internet,” he added. “It’s about unlocking new opportunities in education, healthcare, commerce and everyday life.”

Red Deer’s population will join more than one million homes and businesses in Alberta that currently have access to TELUS PureFibre.

“This is great news for Red Deer,” remarked Mayor Ken Johnston.

“Having access to this kind of technology will make a real difference in people’s day-to-day lives—whether it’s kids doing homework, small businesses growing online or families staying connected,” he believes.

Unlike traditional copper lines, where download speeds outpace upload speeds, fibre-optic cables provide equally fast upload and download capabilities.

This distinction benefits several common use cases such as video conferencing, remote work, online education, and tele-health, according to a statement from BC-based TELUS, which serves more than 20 million customers.
