Calgary-based startup EnviroApps is on a mission to bring hazardous waste and dangerous goods shipping documentation into the digital age.
Founded by environmental compliance veteran Amit Bhargava and software developer Mayank Singh, EnviroApps addresses a critical and often-overlooked problem: outdated, paper-based documentation for the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG). These documents are vital for regulatory compliance and emergency response—but as Bhargava notes, they’re frequently incomplete, illegible, or simply inaccessible when it matters most.
“Having worked in environmental compliance for over 25 years, I saw firsthand how inefficient the system was,” said Bhargava. “Reconnecting with Mayank, a high school classmate with a deep software background, gave us the right mix of expertise to tackle this head-on.”
Since launching in 2020, EnviroApps has introduced Canada’s first proven electronic TDG shipping document solution for road transport. The platform, which is 100% compliant following multiple audits by Transport Canada, streamlines recordkeeping, enhances safety, and supports ESG reporting—all in one user-friendly interface.
Early traction has been strong. EnviroApps has secured paying clients across sectors, including a major refinery and several oil and gas operators. The company has also partnered with the Alberta Motor Transport Association on the province’s first commercial hydrogen fuelling station. Despite being bootstrapped, the team has maintained momentum through lean operations and access to top-tier development talent.
Convincing an industry rooted in regulatory caution to adopt new technology hasn’t been easy. But Bhargava credits EnviroApps’ collaborative approach—including direct engagement with regulators, industry associations, and emergency responders—with helping the company gain trust and shape national compliance standards.
“Regulatory uncertainty was our biggest hurdle,” he said. “By working closely with all stakeholders and proving our platform through audits and real-world pilots, we helped create a path forward for digital compliance in Canada.”
Alberta’s industrial backbone and rising commitment to innovation have played a key role in the company’s development. “Being based in Alberta has given us a front-row seat to both the problem and the opportunity,” said Bhargava. “It’s allowed us to stay close to customers and build a culture focused on practical innovation, safety, and sustainability.”
As a member of Platform Calgary, EnviroApps is now part of a broader community of startups pushing boundaries. “Platform Calgary isn’t just a space—it’s a launchpad,” said Bhargava. “The mentorship, resources, and peer network help us scale with purpose.”
With regulatory buy-in, industry traction, and a growing focus on ESG, EnviroApps is well positioned to lead the digital transformation of TDG compliance—replacing clipboards and carbon copies with real-time, secure, and scalable solutions.
