Calgary-based Blackline Safety is doubling down on its mission to protect workers in some of the world’s most hazardous environments, announcing a major expansion of its in-house quality assurance (QA) program. From lone oilfield workers to firefighters and power grid technicians, every device the company ships will now face more rigorous testing than ever before.
Best known for its award-winning connected safety wearables and area gas monitors, Blackline’s technology is used by more than 2,200 organizations to protect over 165,000 workers worldwide. These devices provide live monitoring, automatic incident alerts, and location-based insights—helping teams respond faster, prevent incidents, and make informed decisions with real-time safety data.
“When most people think of safety technology, they think about the moment it matters—a gas leak detected, an SOS alert triggered, a worker protected,” said Blair Svoboda, Director of Quality Assurance at Blackline Safety. “But protection starts on the bench, in the lab, and on the line.”
The QA expansion—conducted entirely in-house at Blackline’s Calgary manufacturing facility—builds on a CDN $2 million investment in Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and advanced inspection tools. These upgrades provide greater oversight across the production process, with automated equipment testing for dock insertions, button presses, water immersion, extreme temperatures, and dust penetration.
“All of our testing is done in true-to-life simulated environments just steps from the manufacturing floor, enabling us to react in real time as needed—a process you can’t replicate when manufacturing is outsourced,” Svoboda noted.
Blackline’s QA team has grown more than 250%, now 35 specialists strong, spanning operations in Canada, the UK, France, the U.S., and the UAE. Every device undergoes a 68-point inspection before shipping, from validating radios, sensors, and alarms to running connectivity checks across cellular and satellite networks.
“Every test comes down to one question: will this device keep someone safe when it counts?” Svoboda said. “Quality assurance isn’t about ticking boxes—it’s about ensuring reliability for the people depending on us in the field.”
By keeping QA and manufacturing under one roof, Blackline ensures complete control over product quality, speed of iteration, and rapid response to issues. The company’s expanded capabilities position it to accelerate product development while maintaining its reputation for reliability in a competitive global safety technology market.
