B.C. Startup skiKrumb Expands Wearable Safety Tech for Ski Hills to Alberta Resort

January 27, 2026 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

This month, the Vancouver innovator skiKrumb unveiled expansion into Alberta.

When Techcouver reported on skiKrumb in 2023, the startup’s wearable technology was certainly interesting—but hardly anywhere.

Since then, the Startup of the Year finalist has expanded to iconic resorts such as Big White and Mt. Washington.

Marmot Basin has become the first resort in Alberta to launch skiKrumb’s radio-based GPS tracking system designed specifically for ski lodges.

Unlike phone apps or Bluetooth devices, skiKrumb uses a compact, wearable hardware device that operates independently of cellular service, using specialized radio technology to deliver reliable, real-time location updates every 10 seconds—even in tree-covered terrain, cold temperatures, and remote areas in the Rockies.

For skiKrumb founder Keith Macintyre, it’s a special achievement.

“Marmot Basin is where my love for real mountain skiing began,” the Canadian entrepreneur explains.

Macintyre, who serves his startup as chief executive officer, says Marmot Basin was the first major mountain he skied—an experience which cemented his lifelong connection to winter mountain culture.

“To see skiKrumb live here, helping families ski with confidence at the very resort that shaped my passion, is a full-circle moment I’ll never forget,” he commented.

The idea for skiKrumb was inspired after Macintyre was separated from his own child on the slopes.

He found his son, but remained determined to develop a solution to prevent any future occurrences.

“That peace of mind, knowing exactly where everyone is, completely changes the mountain experience for parents,” Macintyre says.

“We built skiKrumb to preserve the freedom and independence that make skiing special, and to give families an effortless way to stay connected on the mountain,” remarked the CEO.

skiKrumb “provides dependable, real-time tracking that works in the conditions we ski and snowboard in every day,” according to Colin Borrow, who functions as Director of Skiing for Marmot Basin.

“Bringing this technology to Marmot Basin reinforces our commitment to family-friendly innovation and elevates the overall mountain experience,” he stated. “Skiing and Snowboarding should be about exploring and having fun.”

SkiKrumb trackers are now available for purchase or rent at Marmot Basin, which offers 3,000 vertical feet of terrain across a mix of groomed runs, open bowls, and glades, with scenery of the Canadian Rockies.
