A company based out of Calgary is developing camera-based, AI-powered, 3-D vision technology for drones and other robotics.
Using proprietary technology, Vision3x aims to provide a complete picture of an object or environment in real time, with powerful use cases across the defence and agriculture sectors.
The startup was founded by chief executive officer Dr. Uzma Ahmed Din, who graduated from the University of Calgary.
“The more accurate and complete data we have, the more useful it is,” Din informed Innovate Calgary recently.
At the University of Calgary, Din worked on her PhD in electrical and software engineering.
There, the roboticist-entrepreneur developed an early prototype and explored how her technology could work outside of a lab.
“I just like to make things work,” she said.
Din took advantage of the university’s Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking, as well as the educational institution’s Evolve to Innovate program, in order to bridge research-to-market gaps.
Founded in January, Vision3x ultimately utilized Innovate Calgary services such as the Innovation Catalyst Grant to gain both funding and advisory support.
“You don’t have to know everything about the business,” Din recalls realizing. “They will help you and they will teach you.”
Vision3x’s technology—which can capture up to 95% of a scene in a single pass—is just one-tenth the cost of LiDAR and only half the weight, all without requiring GPS.
“Our patented sensing technology delivers 3X the usable depth range of conventional camera systems, seeing farther with greater precision at every distance,” the Canadian company claims.
Din says that Vision3x continues to advance its technology and battle-test it across more challenging conditions such as extreme weather.
