The World Economic Forum has announced its cohort of 2024 Technology Pioneers. Just one Canadian startup was recognized and that company calls Calgary home – Carbon Upcycling.
The select group of 100 leading tech startups are focused on applying new breakthroughs to develop clean energy solutions, healthcare innovation and progress in biotech, space, and neurotechnology.
This year’s cohort is harnessing AI and data to drive sustainability and more equitable decision-making in industries and governments.
Co-founded by CEO Apoorv Sinha, Carbon Upcycling was included based on its approach to carbon capture and utilization, capturing CO2 emissions from industrial byproducts and transforming them into sustainable materials that can replace carbon-intensive cement. This process not only sequesters CO2 but also helps create resilient, circular supply chains.
As one example, the company enlisted a large and established supplier of construction materials – BURNCO Rock Products – to partner and test a process to convert landfilled coal combustion residuals to concrete-grade fly ash, and in the process sequester large amounts of CO2.
As a WEF Technology Pioneer, Carbon Upcycling joins a global community of leading enterprises and will participate in key meetings and discussions throughout the year, including the annual meeting to be held in China in late June.
The company was also named to Cleantech Group’s 2024 Global Cleantech 100 earlier this year.
