Calgary-based Carbon Upcycling is strengthening its executive team as it scales technology designed to reduce emissions in one of the world’s most carbon-intensive industries: cement.
The cleantech company has appointed Suzy Taherian as Chief Financial Officer, bringing more than 25 years of leadership and capital markets experience as the firm prepares to deploy its first commercial projects.
Cement production accounts for roughly 7% of global carbon emissions, making it one of the most difficult industrial sectors to decarbonize. Carbon Upcycling’s technology uses captured CO₂ and industrial byproducts to produce lower-carbon cement materials, targeting one of the hardest sectors to transform.
Founded in Calgary, Carbon Upcycling is part of Alberta’s growing carbon management and industrial decarbonization ecosystem, where startups are developing technologies to reduce emissions from energy production, materials manufacturing, and other heavy industries.
Taherian brings more than two decades of executive leadership, board, and capital markets experience across the construction, energy, and climate sectors. She most recently served as Chief Financial Officer at 3Degrees, a climate solutions firm that works with Fortune 100 companies on energy and decarbonization strategies.
“Carbon Upcycling is commercializing a technology that sits at the intersection of industrial performance and climate impact,” said Taherian. “I look forward to working with the leadership team and board to align capital, governance, and operational execution to support long-term growth.”
Taherian has previously held leadership roles at companies including Chevron, LanzaTech, and environmental commodities platform Xpansiv. During her time as CFO at Xpansiv, she helped raise more than US$700 million in investment from partners including Blackstone and supported the acquisition of strategic assets that accelerated the company’s growth.
Her experience financing and scaling climate technology platforms will support Carbon Upcycling as the company moves from its first-of-kind project toward repeatable deployments across North America and Europe.
The appointment follows other recent leadership changes at the Alberta cleantech firm. Last month, Carbon Upcycling named Markus Kritzler as Chief Executive Officer, succeeding co-founder Apoorv Sinha, who led the company from its founding and helped establish it as one of Calgary’s emerging climate technology companies. Kritzler joined Carbon Upcycling as Chief Revenue Officer in 2025.
“We are thrilled to welcome Suzy to Carbon Upcycling,” said Kritzler. “Her strategic leadership strengthens our governance and our ability to mobilize capital efficiently as we build clean materials platforms for partners around the world.”
Carbon Upcycling is preparing to launch its first full-scale commercial project later this year while advancing additional deployments in North America and Europe as demand grows for lower-carbon cement solutions.
