Clean Energy Project in Alberta to Help Industrial Sector Produce More ‘Responsible Oil and Gas’

September 10, 2026 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

Calgary’s Enhance Energy has started building Canada’s largest carbon capture and storage project.

The Origins CCS Hub in Clive will store up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year with the ability to grow to expand in the future.

The Alberta facility is expected to be operational by early 2027.

Alberta “is a global leader in carbon capture and storage technology, thanks to our geology, expertise, and investment environment,” says Brian Jean, Minister of Energy and Minerals for the Government of Alberta.

The Enhance Energy Hub “will help ensure Alberta produces the most responsible oil and gas in the world while creating investment and jobs in rural Alberta,” Jean said.

“This project will play a key role in driving our economy forward,” the provincial minister stated.

Candice Paton, Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Enhance Energy, believes that the Origins Project “is a game changer for both Alberta and Canada.”

“With the largest national CCS site to date, we can compete globally, while leveraging the skills and expertise of local workers,” stated Paton. “Enhance is proud and excited to bring this project to life.”

Alberta is already home to the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line, one of the world’s largest carbon dioxide transportation systems.

Built with Canadian steel, the Origins Project will use a pipeline to connect the hub to Alberta’s CO2 transportation network, storing from heavy industrial sources.

The project is supported by multiple grants from Natural Resources Canada’s Energy Innovation Program.

“We promised Canadians we would leverage our abundant energy resources to be an energy superpower,” commented Projects like the Origins CCS Hub are doing exactly that: strengthening Canada’s Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources for the Government of Canada.

“Projects like the Origins CCS Hub are … strengthening Canada’s energy sector, creating jobs and attracting investment, all while growing our way to net zero by 2050,” Hodgson continued. “The federal and provincial governments and industry are working together as one Team Canada to build big things in this country again and to make sure every Canadian benefits from a stronger, cleaner, more competitive economy.”

Enhance Energy currently operates the Clive CO2 Sequestration Facility and has so far permanently stored more than nine million tonnes of CO2 since 2020.
