Earlier this year, Serenity Power raised a pre-seed funding round.
The Canadian climatech startup is developing compact solid oxide fuel cell power systems, targeting communities relying on diesel for energy.
Integrating advanced solid oxide fuel cells with an innovative reforming catalyst and intelligent system control, Serenity’s systems provide reliable distributed electricity with lower carbon intensity.
“Industries like oil and gas still rely heavily on conventional combustion to power remote operations, on both the small scale (watts) and larger scales (kilowatts),” Aleisha Cerny, cofounder of Serenity Power, remarked in April.
Serenity Power has won the Catalyzing Canada Award at MaRS Climate Impact, earned the $100K Women in Tech Investment Prize at the Elevate Festival, and secured the $100K Black Entrepreneur Prize by Rep Matters Angel Syndicate at Startupfest.
“Our mission is to replace those generators with clean, fuel-flexible systems that can use the fuels already available on site, while providing a pathway to 100% zero-emission power,” Cerny has stated.
Founded in 2024 by engineers from the University of Toronto and out of stealth since 2025, Serenity Power has established a strategic presence in Calgary, where it has garnered support from Alberta Innovates, Mitacs, Innovation Asset Collective, Innovate Calgary, and NGIF Accelerator.
The team is applying its pre-seed capital toward a 100-watt generator to power supervisory control and data acquisition and instrumentation in the field, with plans to develop larger systems of 100kW and beyond.
Michael Pastula, an experienced fuel-cell engineer who joined the company as chief technology officer in May, believes the approach provides a practical route to commercialization.
“We can get to the field quicker,” he informed Innovate Calgary recently.
Prototyping facilities at Innovate Calgary’s Aerospace Innovation Hub have helped Serenity build its first fuel-cell stacks and prototypes as the Cleantech company aims for the market.
Moving forward, Serenity is in the early stages of a seed fundraising round.
The larger round of capital would support manufacturing and supply-chain development for larger systems.
Proceeds from the pre-seed round will be used to build Serenity Power’s first working prototype, advance system engineering and integration, and execute initial field demonstrations with industry partners, according to a statement from the startup, as it prepares for the next stage of commercialization.
