Calgary’s Brightsquid to Hatch Digital Health Innovation Academy in Alberta

August 24, 2023 by Knowlton Thomas 1 Comment

Brightsquid Secure Communications believes that the healthcare sector needs more innovation.

“Government-run healthcare organizations aren’t structured to innovate in a timely or efficient way,” the Alberta health-tech firm laments, adding that “most health technology companies fail against strict privacy standards, lengthy negotiations to integrate with established technology vendors, and government procurement cycles that can take years.”

That is why Brightsquid launched the HATCH accelerator program: to help healthcare startup companies overcome these challenges and get innovations in the hands of physicians and patients.

In collaboration with Alberta-based nonprofit Greg’s Wings and the TELUS Health Exchange, HATCH promotes the commercialization of “patient empowerment.”

“We work with emerging technologies to support their privacy compliance and accelerate their entry to market in an effort to advance the digital transformation of healthcare with more trustworthy technology available for more jobs to be done in healthcare,” the company explains.

Brightsquid was founded in 2009 to expedite treatment and facilitate health by enabling secure communication between healthcare teams and patients. The company’s flagship product, Secure-Mail, meets the highest patient privacy requirements in the world to deliver communications accessible from any device with Internet. The platform is designed to help healthcare teams share patient information more quickly and easily than ever before.

This month, Alberta Innovates invested more than $400,000 into Brightsquid so that the Calgary firm can develop its next major feature, the Digital Health Innovation Academy, which will further support the region’s advancement of digital-forward health-tech.

Building on signals of strength with the province’s tech economy, Alberta Innovates unveiled a total of $13.6 million across 19 partners through its Ecosystem Development Partnerships Program.

The Program supports the ecosystem by providing services for entrepreneurs, supporting markets, accelerating the development of emerging technologies, and building out platforms and networks.

Employing nearly 600 professionals across science and tech, Alberta Innovates manages 1,300 projects in a portfolio valued at $1.3 billion.
