Alberta Earmarks $55M Toward New UCalgary Science and Innovation Hub

March 11, 2024 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

Allotted in Alberta’s 2024 budget is a sizeable sum directed at the University of Calgary.

The Province has earmarked $55 Million toward the construction of an onsite research and science hub, the government announced recently.

The hub will span seven floors of space and bring together a variety of disciplines, including neuroscience, chemistry, and energy.

The new hub will also allow room for up to 2,000 more graduate and undergraduate spaces.

It will also feature incubation, enabling entrepreneurs to work side-by-side with researchers and scientists.

This investment will increase enrolment and empower UCalgary researchers to make bold new discoveries,” the university stated online.

However, not everyone is fully pleased with Alberta’s announcement.

For example, the university’s students’ union lamented how, despite the influx of capital, the new provincial budget actually reduced per-capita funding for post-secondary education institutions by over 7%.

Regardless, UCalgary remains a high-performing institution.

According to the Association of University Technology Manager’s Canadian Licensing Activity Survey, the University of Calgary was the top startup creator out of 32 Canadian academic and non-profit research institutions in 2023 for the third year in a row.

“This is an exciting achievement for UCalgary to be the leader in research startup creation for three years in a row,” Dr. William Ghali, vice-president of research, stated in October. “Our innovators continue to seize the opportunity to pursue the startup journey, delivering impact to our communities, and enhancing our reputation on a national scale.”

The school is also aiding Calgary’s ambition of becoming a capital city in Canada for quantum technology and innovation.

The University of Calgary last year formed a strategic partnership with the Government of Alberta and Mphasis to establish Quantum City.

Quantum City’s mission is to establish quantum-focused fabrication infrastructure, new talent development programs, and enhanced commercialization pathways.

Construction on UCalgary’s Multidisciplinary Science Hub is slated to begin this year.
