Alberta’s Blockchain Consortium Kicks Off ‘Stand with Crypto’ Campaign in Canada

July 8, 2024 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

The world’s largest custodian of crypto assets has brought a major campaign to Canada.

Last year, Coinbase launched “Stand with Crypto” in the U.S., with an aim to disrupt America’s traditional financial system by encouraging the adoption and legitimacy of crypto assets as legal currencies and investments.

The campaign points out that more than 50 million Americans own crypto, and nearly 90% “believe the financial system needs updating.”

The nonprofit Stand With Crypto Alliance, which champions “common-sense regulations” for the crypto industry, this month expanded north of the border.

After a year in the US, the campaign has garnered more than one million supporters, who have donated a total of nearly $180 million to the cause, according to data from Coinbase.

Now, the fintech titan is seeking to rally Canada’s five million crypto holders to battle.

Kicking off Coinbase’s movement here in Canada is the Canadian Blockchain Consortium, known for events such as the Canadian Blockchain Summit and the Technology Symposium.

The Alberta-born consortium will be hosting panel discussions this week at Saltlik Restaurant’s Sky Lounge in Calgary.

The series of events involves participation from Alberta Premiere Danielle Smith alongside executives from top crypto companies, who will join together to discuss the potential of Canadian crypto.

Coinbase’s northern expansion of Stand with Crypto follows a conscious effort to “go deeper” into international markets such as Canada.

Ranked as the world’s third-most crypto-aware nation, Canada possesses an “enthusiastic tech ecosystem that has the potential to be a leader in the global crypto economy,” according to Coinbase, which employs 200 full-time workers in Canada since hiring here starting in 2021. The nation represents the company’s largest technology and talent hub outside of the US.

Coinbase is also an investor in multiple Canadian crypto startups, including Fintech.ca notables MinervaAI from Toronto and Dapper Labs out of Vancouver, as well as Axelar, Horizon Blockchain Games, and Zapper.
