Edmonton Startup 2S Recognized for Innovation in Water Management Tech

February 28, 2025 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

What if you could receive critical data on important water quality metrics in real-time?

For municipalities and mining operators, that kind of tech could prove a major advantage.

In the mining industry, for example, operations often face significant challenges with water quality due to metal leakage and contamination, which can lead to environmental violations and fines.

Based out of Edmonton, 2S Water is developing technology that continuously detects dozens of metals, providing immediate data for process optimization and regulatory compliance.

2S Water’s flagship product, the AquaValid sensor, provides a customizable answer to metal detection problems for the mining industry and municipalities. The sensors feature a plug-and-play design with full automation for maximum convenience.

The Alberta company claims that real-time data provided from AquaValid systems can provide operational savings of up to 30% on chemical costs.

Freshwater consumption can also be reduced through 2S’ system thanks to an increased ability to utilize recycled water. And another benefit is ensuring environmental regulations compliance, a key element for mining and municipal entities.

AquaValid can detect a number of metals, including Aluminium, Barium, Calcium, Gallium, Iron, Lead, Magnesium, Nickel, Sodium, Mercury, and Zinc.

Launched in 2017, 2S received a $100K grant from Sustainable Development Technology Canada in 2021 before going on to secure seed funding as well as graduate from the Creative Destruction Lab.

The company is an active alumnus of the Foresight 50, an annual list of innovative cleantech entities from across Canada. 2S Water originally made the inaugural 2021 list before returning in November for Foresight’s fourth annual ranking.
